Day One

We're off to Barcelona

sunny

On August 6th, Sean, Allan Michael and Elaina and I began our adventure to Spain. We had a 10:30am flight and my dear friend Dee Dee agreed to drive us to the airport on her birthday! Thanks Dee Dee! We didn't have any problems with the flight. Following Rick Steve's advice we carried on everything (even though we could have checked one bag for free). So each of us had one carry-on suitcase and one back-pack for the plane.

We connected through JFK and since we had a 5 hours layover, I purchased a one-month membership to the admiral's club (which gets you, your spouse and kids in to the club for $99 which is much cheaper than the on-site $50 per person charge otherwise unless you have enough miles). Elaina and Allan Michael loved the kids area in the Admirals' Club (cubby holes to sleep, relax in, computer and TV and kid-size furniture). Sean enjoyed the TV lounge and business area, and I was able to work a few hours by the kids area using the free WiFi. They had light snacks and drinks for free which also were handy during the long layover. In fact, we were enjoying it so much we missed the first call for our flight but got on in plenty of time.

We sat 2 x 2 on the plane which worked out pretty well. The bad thing is the planes these days are so full all the time that it's really impossible to get any rest. Plus the plane we were on only had a small TV every 4 or 5 rows so not individual monitors so kids got a bit bored and restless but we managed. I even ordered special gluten free meals for Elaina and me which they provided (though I have to say they were not that good but it was sustenance and we had our own snacks that we had packed). We arrived in Barcelona on time and very tired (kids ended up falling asleep maybe for an hour and a half, Sean slept maybe 2 hours and I slept i think for 30 minutes.
